Hello Roadrunners, and Welcome to the 2019-20 School Year at Los Cerritos!

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! The Los Cerritos Community is truly the hidden gem of Long Beach, and I am deeply honored to be back as the lucky principal of this amazing school. This is my fifth year at Los Cerritos and I couldn't be happier!

My career journey through education began at the elementary level as a 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade teacher at Keller Elementary School (now a middle school) where I was a General Education Classroom Teacher for nine years.  Following my time at Keller, I moved to Jordan High School as their Small Learning Communities and English Learner Coordinator. After that I was as an Assistant Principal at Hill Classical Middle School. It has been so rewarding to return to the elementary school setting, where my background in instruction and curriculum is its strongest. I'm thankful for the broad perspective my work at the secondary level provided about where our K-5 students are going, how we can help them prepare for their secondary experience, and what they ultimately need to become well-rounded college, career, and community-ready individuals in the future. I'm also the proud mother of a 9th grade student at Millkian High School and I use my 'mom hat' every day at Los Cerritos to help keep perspective about how important EVERY child is here, each and every day. Our kids are such hopeful examples of what our future holds.

Last year we chose a fun and exciting theme for our learning together, "Celebrate What's Great at Los Cerritos," and we were able set goals, work hard, and celebrate all our successes with students, both big and small. This year our theme is focused on creating a sense of community and positive change, and it's an interactive theme which allows us to fill in the blanks and apply ideas in multiple ways:

This sounds very positive, but you might be asking yourself, "Ms. Gamboa, what do you mean by a 'BETTER' world?" I sure love an inquisitive mind, and my response to that question is to ask YOU to fill in the blanks. What do we want for our students and our community? What are our wishes for our children's futures? Could we swap out the word "BETTER" for other things we're willing to work together towards? How about working together towards a KINDER world? Or a GREENER world? Or a SAFER or SMARTER world? Next time you're visiting our office, feel free to fill in the blanks for yourself on our main bulletin board. The Los Cerritos community and world hold so many great possibilities. It's up to US to make these happen together, and I'm confident that we're already on the ROAD to success! Los Cerritos truly is a better school because of you and your students.

I wish everyone an amazing 2019-20 school year!

Sincerely and with warm regard,

Alissa Gamboa
