See what we are recycling at lunch

We have a beautiful new recycling center and students actively taking a role in our recycling program!

Here is what our lunchtime recycling program looks like.  Ask your students about it. They have already been working on this.

Cans and bottles can - These are bottles and cans with CCR label.

Chicken scraps bucket - leftover crackers, sandwiches (remove meat), soft fruit or vegetables, chips, bread, cheese, pizza.

Compost - fruit and vegetable scraps with no dressing or sauce on them.

Rinse station.  This is used to rinse out Capri Sun and juice/milk cartons.

Capri Storage - When full volunteers mail to Terracycle for cash back to school.

Purple Recycling container - While much can be recycled we only recycle clean items to avoid attracting ants. Cardboard, plastic ziplock bags, Plastic containers #1=7.

Reduce "Dirty Energy" Use, and Save $ Too!

Last year I signed up for a program that I found on Facebook that rewards users for saving energy by turning off electrical devices at home for about an hour a week. It's called OhmConnect, and the company is based in the San Francisco area. Well, to make a long story short I tried it and already had over $75 paid back to my PayPal account for signup and participation. They also track your energy savings and what that equates to in overall reduction in carbon emissions. If you're curious about this program go to this link:

Better Business Bureau gives them an A+ rating and so far my experience has been fun and positive.

If you're interested, please don't hesitate to ask me about the program. We could even start a Los Cerritos team...

Always proud to be part of a Green Ribbon School community!

Zero Trash Lunch

Lunch Box

What a success!  Out of all our students who bring their lunch to school WE CAN get down to producing only half trashcan of waste! Imagine if we did this everyday!

"Positive publicity generated by a school that is protecting the earth not only buoys the spirits of the students, staff, and parents at that school, it also offers an opportunity to educate the broader school community on steps they can take to be stewards of the environment."

Volunteer Opportunities

Time is running out to get your volunteer on!

  • Lunch time recycling volunteering
  • Cardboard recycling - you can stop by and do this anytime. We need help breaking down cardboard for recycling

Please contact the PTA if you are available or check back soon for online sign ups.

Walking School Bus

What is a Walking School Bus? Those who want to participate meet at a designated corner and then walk with an adult and other classmates. This should start to eliminate some of the traffic and pollution around the school generated by valet.

Meet at 8:30 to allow plenty of time to enjoy our walk.

If you are interested in getting some exercise and can be a parent who walks please contact the PTA.  You don't have to sign up for every day. Just let us know what days work with your schedule.

In the event of a rainy day the walking school bus will be cancelled.
